FountainForge helps you write screenplays in plain text, preview the formatted screenplay, and export your work. AI writing tools, Character Studio, and Storyboard Studio are optional. Studio image features are experimental and intended as planning and inspiration tools.
Privacy: Read the FountainForge Privacy Policy for details about local storage, optional AI services, backups, and purchases.
Other app support: Binge Bingo, LyricVault, and PromptVault support and privacy information.
Free screenplay and optional upgrade
Use one screenplay with all features and no time limit. The separate tutorial sample does not use that slot. Unlimited Screenplays is a one-time in-app purchase for creating or importing more screenplays; check the price displayed by the App Store. There is no subscription. Optional AI providers may charge separately and require compatible hardware, an eligible account, and provider setup.
Move a screenplay between devices
- On the device with your latest writing, open Tools → Backup & Restore. You can also find Backup & Restore in Settings or Library.
- Choose the script under Save One Script, then Export Script Backup. To include everything, choose Export Entire Library.
- Save the .fountainforgebackup file in Files, such as iCloud Drive, or transfer it using AirDrop or your preferred storage provider.
- On the receiving device, open Backup & Restore → Restore Backup and choose that file.
- Review the script names and backup date. Leave the optional app settings switch off for a normal writing transfer. Writing, notes, and images are included either way.
- Choose Add to Library, then open Library and check the added writing and images.
Restore always adds separate copies. It does not merge changes or replace an existing script, even if the titles match. Restoring again adds more copies. Devices do not automatically sync edits; export a fresh backup from the device with the latest work when you want to move it again. Cancel closes the review without adding anything.
Protect your work
Keep and check regular backups, including a recent copy outside this device. Autosave and checkpoints are not substitutes for separate backups. You can inspect a backup with Restore Backup and then Cancel. Periodically add a copy and open its writing and images to check that the work you expect is there. Backup files are not encrypted by FountainForge; store them somewhere you trust.
Software errors, device problems, and accidental changes can cause lost work. FountainForge cannot guarantee that work can always be saved or recovered. To the extent permitted by applicable law, the developer is not responsible for lost work or data, including missing, damaged, or unusable backups.
Restore an upgrade purchase
Open Library or Settings → Unlimited Screenplays → Restore Purchases while using the purchasing App Store account. This restores the upgrade, not your scripts. Use Backup & Restore to recover or move writing. Existing writing, exports, and backup recovery remain accessible without purchasing the upgrade.
